Frequently asked questions
Why do I need a headshot?
Your face (or a photo of your face) is your first introduction, and since you never get a second chance to make a first impression you want to make sure it is a good one. A good quality headshot will make you look good, get you noticed, and convey professionalism, personality, and approachability.
What is an environmental portrait?
This is a photograph that is taken in front of a live background of a particular setting. Environmental portraits tell more of a story about the person’s profession. A business owner standing in front of the store they started, or a farmer standing among their crops are examples of this. These kinds of photographs are generally more relaxed but still maintain a sense of professionalism.
How often should I update my headshot?
Generally every 2-3 years. I understand the temptation to take one good photo and stubbornly use it as long as possible. However, your appearance will naturally change as time goes by. Plus there are other variables such as new hairstyles, or gaining/losing weight that should be considered. It is best for you to be honest with yourself. If you look at your headshot and then look in the mirror and notice a big difference then it is time for a new photo!
How do I prepare for a headshot?
Hype yourself up! Do things that up your confidence level. Focus on your look. Cut your hair or get it styled, get skin beauty treatments if needed, and choose the clothing you'll be wearing. Drink plenty of water (avoid alcohol) and rest well the night before to help avoid those dreaded eye bags. And if you happen to wake up with a blemish on your face on the day of the photoshoot then just take a deep breath and think happy thoughts. Photoshop is our friend so I'll make it go away. Overall just keep your stress levels down!
How long does a headshot session last?
It takes me about 15 minutes to set up my equipment, and another 15 to put it up. For the actual photography itself, it depends on the package, outfit changes, and location(s). Every photoshoot varies, but here are some rough estimates:
MINI - 15 Minutes
SIGNATURE - 1 Hour
BRANDING - 4 Hours
BROKERAGE - 15 Minutes/Person
Do you have any tips on what to wear or not wear?
Dress comfortably and keep things simple. YOU are the focus so minimal jewelry, clean and natural makeup, and a timeless/classic hairstyle will go a long way. If you still need guidance then Google headshot photos and see what other people have worn for their headshots. Usually photographers say to avoid clothing with bold and distracting patterns because we want the focus of the headshot to be on your eyes/face but not everyone is the same; some people can rock the bold. If you have a favorite outfit or shirt that is not traditional then bring it! Odds are that you like it because the fit is perfect, so if that's the case then I'll be able to capture that confidence on camera.
I have never taken a headshot. Will you please guide/pose/direct me?
Yes, absolutely. I am very vocal and give immediate feedback. I will pose you and we will take photos from multiple angles (if required) until we are both happy that we've captured some great photos.
I'm hesitant to take headshot photos. How can I calm my nerves?
It is sometimes normal to be uncomfortable when taking photos, and camera shyness/anxiety is a real thing. however, it is my job to offer a relaxing experience when capturing your best look. Some of the things I can do during our session include playing music during the photoshoot, give you (or not give you) constant feedback and posing suggestions, and of course engage in conversation with you. I am a pretty laid-back guy and can discuss anything so you'll be in good hands. If you are still unsure or need any other accommodations then please reach out and we can definitely have that discussion!
I don't like photos of myself. Sometimes it seems that I look different, & this is enhanced in professional photos. Why is that?
This is all psychological. We see ourselves in the mirror all the time it should mean that we should like seeing photos of ourselves, right? Well not necessarily. The reflection you see is your mirror image and it is not the same as how the rest of the world sees you. It is perfectly normal to see an un-flipped image of yourself and think you look a little strange. Add to that the fact that a headshot is taken with professional lighting at a different angle/perspective from what you're used to so. The good news is that the rest of the world prefers to see the real un-flipped you, and a professional headshot enhances just that. Nobody sees you the way you see yourself; you're the only person that does. Remember that your brain is lying to you and that other people don't care since it's all in your head. Ask your friends and family to send you their favorite photo
How much space do you need to set up in my home/office?
The best photographs occur when I have ample space for my equipment, but I do not mind working in compact locations. I would say an 8' x 12' area is just enough space, but again bigger is always better. When I go to people's homes I usually set up in an empty room, the living room or dining room, and even garages. In offices, I can set up in conference rooms and break rooms.
I don't have any space in my home/office and I don't want to take an environmental headshot. What can I do?
Not a problem at all! Just mention this at your time of booking and we can discuss options.
How Long does it take to get my final headshots back?
Your proof gallery is sent over the same day of the session. Once you choose your favorite image(s) it usually takes 2-3 days for them to be delivered via email. If you need your edited headshot(s) back sooner then I'll charge a $25 rush fee (upon availability.)
How do I choose my headshot(s)? Can you choose for me?
After our session, you will receive an email containing a link to your online proof gallery. From there you can take your time and decide which image(s) you would like. If you are indifferent, or trust my trained eye better than yours, then i can definitely choose for you.
How do you retouch photos?
My retouching approach includes cleaning up any stray hairs, eliminating temporary blemishes like scabs and pimples, leaving permanent skin features like moles and freckles alone, and reducing the effect of wrinkles and bags under the eyes. Some people may be extra red around the nose, chin, and cheeks so I even out the skin tones in those areas. If your eyes are red from a tough night of allergies then I'll touch that up as well. My goal is to make your headshot look like the best version of you now, in the present.
is there anything else I should know?
